Models start reading the machinery
Open AI systems are becoming inspectable: models read weights, runtimes preserve hidden state, artifacts gain signatures and agents debate where memory belongs.
Open models are learning to read the machinery they run on.
Open models are learning to read the machinery they run on. Qwen 3.8 27B identified a game from raw weights on a laptop; community experiments used frontier agents to propose tiny targeted edits, while llama.cpp started preserving speculative hidden state and LiteLLM signed its containers. The same pattern is visible in agents: builders want memory extracted and re-injected automatically, but communities are debating whether it belongs in the harness, a side database or skills themselves. This is a shift from treating models as opaque endpoints toward inspectable systems with explicit artifacts, state and repair paths. The caveat is that weight-editing results, runtime gains and deployment savings are mostly author- or vendor-reported, and two Reddit sources failed. The implication is practical: open AI advantage increasingly depends on auditable internals and reproducible operating contracts, not weights alone. Runtime state becomes explicit
- Speculative decoding preserves MTP hidden state llama.cpp build b12091 checkpoints the boundary hidden row and rebuilds verification rows on supported restore paths, making speculative state resumable without saving every row. github-actions[bot] ↗
- Hexagon skips losing top-k tiles Build b12094 rejects 256-float blocks whose maximum cannot reach the running threshold, then inserts only survivors for k values from two through 64. github-actions[bot] ↗

Local runtimes absorb more modalities and formats
- llama.cpp fixes Qwen3-VL video prompt formatting Build b12098 adds accurate support for the Qwen3-VL video prompt format, tightening multimodal input handling rather than announcing a new model. github-actions[bot] ↗

- LFM3 GGUFs gain NVFP4 support Build b12088 enables NVFP4 LFM3 files, extending the runtime’s low-precision model surface without supplying independent quality, memory-use or throughput measurements. github-actions[bot] ↗
Evaluation reaches state and weight space
